An oil and filter change is one of the most basic and routine automotive maintenance items. It's also one of the most vital for preserving the longevity of your Subaru model's engine. The automaker's signature Subaru BOXER® engine contains numerous moving metal components that operate under high pressure and heat. Engine oil helps reduce friction and keep temperatures under control. It also helps remove contaminants by transporting them to the oil filter.

Over time, the engine's intense environment naturally causes the oil to degrade and lose its lubrication efficiency and protective qualities. Additionally, when the oil filter reaches its capacity, it can no longer trap contaminants effectively. Even when the vehicle isn't being driven, oil will break down gradually. Subaru generally recommends an oil service interval of every 6,000 miles or every six months-whichever comes first. Providence-area drivers who routinely experience stop-and-go traffic, such as near the 6/10 Connector, or who frequently travel dusty backroads, may require more frequent oil changes.

As a vehicle's only point of contact with the road, tires directly affect safety, handling, efficiency, and overall ride comfort. Tires allow your vehicle to roll smoothly by flexing to absorb bumps and road imperfections, while the tread provides traction for more confident control in wet conditions. Good tires can last upwards of 50,000 miles, depending on factors like age, driving conditions, and the way the vehicle is driven. However, tires wear more quickly up front due to the extra weight and friction from turning. Rotating your tires every six months or 7,000 miles (or every oil change) can help ensure they wear at even rates.

Wheel alignment is equally important. Despite its name, a wheel alignment involves adjusting the suspension so that the wheels roll at proper angles and make adequate contact with the ground. Misalignment can result from sharp impacts (such as potholes and curbs) or simply old or worn components. Symptoms include uneven tread wear,  excessive steering column vibration, or difficulty holding a straight line.

Braking systems are essential to overall vehicle safety. Brake pads and rotors will wear naturally over time and should be inspected regularly. Warning signs include excessive squealing, grinding, or vibration when depressing the brake pedal.

Battery performance can also decline over time, particularly during seasonal temperature changes. Common signs of battery wear include slow engine turnover, dim headlights and interior lights, or dashboard warning indicators. Regular battery testing and prompt replacement can help prevent unexpected breakdowns.

Air conditioning service is another important component of both comfort and visibility. In warmer months, a properly functioning AC system helps regulate cabin temperature and reduce driver fatigue during longer trips. Just as importantly, the system works in conjunction with your vehicle's defroster to remove humidity from the air. This helps prevent windshield fogging and maintains clear visibility in rainy or humid conditions. If your vehicle's AC system feels too warm, produces weak airflow, or operates inefficiently, our technicians can inspect refrigerant levels, evaluate system components, and identify any leaks or performance concerns to restore proper operation.
